Suggestions and itinerary help

Hello!! My husband and I will be traveling abroad for the first time mid june! We have 9 nights/10 days to spend. We fly into Zurich and fly out of Geneva. Here is our rough itinerary. We are open to suggestions, day trips or cutting places in or adding others. We enjoy the outdoors and look forward to hiking and eating!
Day 1- staying in Zurich, daytrip to Appenzell
Day 2 and 3 in Lucerne.
Day 4-7 base in one of these places and do daytrips out from there Lauterbrunnen, grimmelwald, murren or wengen
Day 8 Zermatt
Day 9 Geneva
day 10 Fly out.

If you have must do hikes we would love to hear them! Also if there is a better order to do these towns in based on trains and ease of traveling let us know! We look forward to any suggestions and thank you so much!!

Staying in 4 different places over 9 nights is tough, in my opinion. You will not have time to enjoy Appenzell on arrival day 1, so I would head straight to Luzern. This would let you add a second night in Zermatt.
As for your last night: Geneva is fine if your flight is early, but if your flight is later than 10-11 AM, you could consider staying in Lausanne or Vevey, which I find more scenic than Geneva.

Thank you so much! We arrive at 8 am on day one and we were really only staying in zurich so we could drop our bags and head to appenzelle that day. I saw a hike i really wanted to do there. Would you say as a whole it's not worth it and add a day to zermatt still? Knowing we come in that early would that work? We also fly out at 9 am so i'm guessing knowing that you would keep Geneva for ease, but maybe we just go later on the night before?

If you really want to go to Appenzell, why not go directly after landing and stay overnight there. Then travel from Appenzell to Luzern. You can catch the hourly Voralpen Express from Herisau.

That is a great point. I never even thought of that. I feel my brain has too many options of things I don't know that something so logical never even clicked!

That was a very good suggestion. Plus, the Voralpen Express from St. Gallen to Luzern is quite scenic!
And with a 9AM flight out of Geneva, I would indeed stay in Geneva. Geneva is nice to explore for a few hours.

having to be at Geneva airport by 6am I'd stay as convenient as I possibly could.
