Suggested itinerary for Bernese Oberland for 5 nights

Hi,

I'd be leaving todat to visit Mürren, Wengen, and Lauterbrunnen for 5 nights. What are some bike trails, hiking trails & day trips you'd recommend? This would be my first trip to Switzerland.

I work remotely, and am not officially on vacation, so I'll only be able to spend ~8 hours a day on sightseeing. I'll be back next year, though.

Thank you!

What a great opportunity to get a taste of this marvelous area and plan future adventures!

Rick Steves’ Switzerland Guide book has all of this info and more. Please read a copy and take it along. There are so many logistics, so many choices that you should read up on to see what fits you. far more info than we can answer in the Forum.

You will also want to go to this page https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles and scroll down to read Rick’s articles on Switzerland.

If I understand you correctly, you should be there around now. I think a great resource is the tourist office, I have found the people who work there to be very knowledgeable about the trails and they have often given me great advice about what to hike that day.

Here is an online link to hikes in the area. You can look for ones that are the right difficulty for you, and can read about any closures:

Another good resource, you can choose road cycling or mountain biking routes (some hiking routes are on here as well)

Cycling route #8 from Interlaken to Thun is really nice, along the Lake of Thun.

There are bike rental places in Lauterbrunnen, and you can also rent bikes from many train stations. Some will even allow you to pick-up at one station and drop-off at another.

If the weather is good, the Mannlichen (take the tram from Wengen to the top) to Alpiglen hike is nice. You face the Eiger most of the time, or hike under it, basically walking downhill the whole time on trails through the ski areas. There's a nice restaurant at the end, with a view of Grindewald. Very few people on that route. It drops approximately 2000 feet. You have to take the train back from Grindewald. For a shorter and flatter hike with similar views, try Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, but that one has more people on it. The Murren to Gimmewald walk described in the RS book is also quite easy and beautiful. Basically the whole area is filled with hiking trails so you can't go wrong--just check for the steepness and views you want.
