Stop over flights and checked baggage

We are currently departing Zurich with a stopover (overnight) in Amsterdam before heading back to the US. Before we left on our trip, I looked into what a stopover meant regarding checked luggage and KLM said if it’s 12 hours or longer you must pick up your luggage where you stop over. This is clearly not the case. Baggage is self tagging at Zurich and not where check ins are. My husband fortunately noticed that our baggage tags had the final destination to the US on them. So we had to go downstairs to get that all corrected. Anyway after 3 weeks of travel, being tired, that almost got past us. I guess worst case scenario we’d be sleeping in our clothes but glad not to be! So I guess this is just a warning to pay attention.
