Staying in Neuchâtel, travel tips

Hello,

I am super lucky, I am staying at a friend’s place in Neuchâtel for 13 days in June. I will be going to a music festival there, but I want to get a good sense of Switzerland, as there is so much to see. My main interests are visual art, history and nature. I’m in my 40s and an ok hiker (I really enjoy hiking, but I am no expert). I also love biking. Seeing that Neuchâtel is my base, where should I go? I’m thinking Bern, maybe Basel for art, but I am overwhelmed by where to go in the mountains (so many choices). I’m still figuring out train passes. I also have a a great grandfather from St. Gallen, but time wise I don’t know if I should visit that part of Switzerland. Thanks in advance!

There is a direct train from Neuchatel to St Gallen at 26 past the hour that will get you there in 2 1/2 hours, so its not out of the question. See all the schedules at www.sbb.ch/en.

Sounds like fun! You can see a lot in 13 days. Bern Historical Museum is very interesting, and I like the Kunstmuseum (art museum) there too. Of course Basel is the best for art museums though.

For cycling check out the routes on Switzerland mobility. You will be in a great location for that! You can take a look at various hiking routes on their site as well.

Neuchatel has great access to the Jura mountains, The Gorge de Areuse and Creux du Van are the two 'must do' hikes close by. The trains towards Le Locle and Fleuier provide plenty of other options.

The Rebenweg along Lake Biel is easy to reach by regional train.

The walled town of Murten is only a short train ride away (or boat ride) and can be paired with the roman site at Avenches.

Take the boat across the lake to Estavayer-le-Lac.

Thank you everyone, you are all so kind and helpful. During my trip, I should try to see the Alps (after appreciating what Neuchâtel has to offer). Any recommendations on what region to visit? There are so many choices and they all sound lovely.

Go to the Berner Oberland and into the mountains. I would recommend Wengen or Mürren. Spend at least a couple nights. How high in the mountains you can go to hike without snow may depend on when in June you are going, where you can get accommodations at this late date, and the weather conditions this year.
