Starting to plan a 2 week trip to Switzerland- initial questions about Heididorf & Appenzell

My husband & I (in our 70's) are contemplating a trip to Switzerland, probably September of 2027. We were looking at Great Rail Journeys initially but we have planned many trips previously & after reading Rick Steve's brief intro & many forums, we think we could customize the trip better by doing it on our own. Last year we went to Spain for a week on our own followed by a 7 country, 15 day Viking Ocean cruise & extended on our own in Bergen. It was an amazing trip, first and last Viking cruise because we didn't have that independence we had enjoyed with all of the other trips (although not having to plan as much was a nice change). We both got sick by the end so it was rough the last 3-4 days & some recovery time once home but we are getting the travel bug again and we have not seen any of Switzerland. We loved Salzburg & the Bavarian region and we want to see more of the Alps.
I think we would like to spend time in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Lucerne, Zermatt, Lausanne/Lake Geneva area & Appenzell.

We will fly into Zurich and I am assuming out of Zurich unless there is a better option depending on the itinerary and order of the trip. We are interested in taking some of the scenic trains like Goldenpass, Glacier Express, to mention a couple but I have a lot of research before figuring out which ones work. We also could consider a couple of Viator day trips which we have enjoyed before on our trip to Salzburg & Munich. Other possibilities are Lugano or a day trip to Annecy. We would like to stay at least 2 nights in each place we end up, 3 is even better so we don't have to move too often whenever possible.

My question about Heididorf & Appenzell: Would a train ride from Zurich and spending a day between these two areas be most practical and give us a good experience of that region rather than spending a night there? When I saw that Heidi's house and area she lived is there, that was appealing as I loved the book, movie with Shirley Temple, etc. And Appenzell seems to be the quintessential Switzerland farm land with cows, cheese, beautiful alpine scenery. I was thinking that could be at the start or end of our trip. Any other thoughts or tips are welcome.

I'd look here for info on Heididorf.

As far as the Glacier Express, you need to decide what direction you want to go and if you want 1st or 2nd class. Seat reservations are required and open 6 months before your intended travel date. Reservations can go fast as tour operators, like the aforementioned Great Rail Journeys, snap up the reservations. You don't have to worry about tickets, as I suspect you will be getting the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass.

I haven’t been to Heididorf, but you can certainly do a day trip to Appenzell and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the area as you travel and spend a bit of time in the village as a day trip from Zürich.

Travel time from Zürich to Appenzell is about two hours each way.

Travel time between Appenzell and Heididorf is 2.5 - 3 hours depending on connections.

To do both in one day will definitely depend on how much time you want to spend traveling around between locations. It would be a very full day and leave little time to explore the two locations.

You can play around with your options by looking at sbb.ch for routes and times, but for me, who likes to do long day trips, this would be a lot!

Maienfeld is the actual setting for the novel Heidi, and they would certainly have re-created how it was during that time period…kind of like visiting other fictional character’s ‘homes’ like Anne of Green Gables in PEI, Canada - if that is what you are hoping for it can be a nice and memorable location to visit.

To Sam, Thanks, good point about direction and I figure we would get 1st class Swiss Travel Pass/Rail Pass? I need to look at the SBB app and become familiar with that. Is Swiss Travel Pass the same as Swiss Rail Pass?

To SwissNomad, I loved Anne of Green Gables too! I would be interested in seeing that area if I ever go to Prince Edward Island. And The Sound of Music is my favorite movie so now you know! We went on The Sound of Music tour in Salzburg and it poured rain but I still loved it. That being said, going to both places does sound like a lot and Appenzell might be more practical if our time warrants that. That will be decided when more of my planning comes together. Thank you for your thoughts about this.

Swiss Travel Pass is the official name of the Swiss rail pass. It is called a Travel Pass, because it also works for public boats, buses, local transport. It also gives discounts on mountain lifts (and includes some select mountain lifts like the Rigibahn and the Stanserhornbahn and the Schilthornbahn between the valley floor and Muerren). It also incudes free admission to many museums.
