For 2 weeks the end of September, we will tour Switzerland by car....starting in Zurich & ending in Basel for our cruise.
We have the whole day to explore Basel before we board the ship.
We would like to find a nice area south of Basel to spend the night before embarkation......any suggestions are appreciated!

Not necessarily south of Basel, but how about:
Both old towns upstream (east) of Basel on the Rhine.
You cannot drive in Basel city centre. You have to leave the car in an (expensive) car park on the edge of the city centre, and take a tram, or walk. If Basel is what you want to see, I recommend you stay in Basel on the last night, drop off the car (and save 1 day on the rental). If you stay in a hotel in Basel city you get free travel on the trams and buses. You can then spend the whole day in the city (leave your bags at the hotel), and go on to the boat when you are ready.
