We're suckers for that "Golden Age of Travel" vibe from about the 1880s to the 1920s. Re-reading Diccon Bewes' Slow Train to Switzerland, I'm reminded how Switzerland was at the heart of tourism is this era, and numerous Swiss hotels, bars, cafes, etc. were built in either the art nouveau or the art deco style. Sadly, many of these structures are now gone, or the Nouveau/Deco designs were long ago replaced with something more modern.
But, I know some still exist, and their designs and decor have been lovingly maintained or restored. So, what are some of your favorite Golden Age of Travel iconic places, that still look and feel like a slice of the past? And while I know Zurich, Geneva, and Interlaken will probably all be on the list, bonus points for out-of-the-way and largely undiscovered (to Americans at least) gems. For example, on our last trip we stumbled upon the Kurhaus hotel in Bergün. WOW, what an absolute architectural masterpiece and a true walk back in time. Would love to discover more places like this...
