My husband and I will be spending 7 days in Switzerland following a river cruise (end of April) that ends in Basel. We are spending 3 nights in Murren, followed by 3 nights in Lucerne. The last day will be spent traveling to 'someplace' in southern Switzerland, enroute to 3 nights in Venice. This will be our first trip to Switzerland (and a bucket list trip :-) )
Accommodations in Murren and Lucerne are already booked (phew!) I've been doing seemingly endless research while trying to not end up with a headache. Trying to decide on which train pass is a challenge in itself! Right now I'm leaning towards the Half Fare Card. I'd also like to take advantage of the scenic trains if they make sense.
I would so appreciate some help and suggestions for the following.
1) Route from Basel to Murren? I read about a scenic narrow gauge route via Brunig. Is this something that I can find on the SBB site? Or is there an express train (Golden) from Lucerne to Murren that we could take?
2) Route from Murren to Lucerne? Golden?
3) On the SBB site, some of the rates have a black box with "% CH'. Are these non-refundable?
4) Totally up in the air on the Lucerne to so. Switzerland/Italy route. Someone on this forum had mentioned the Treno Gottardo. I believe this is diff from the Gotthard Express. I couldn't see how to book the Treno on the SBB site. Or is a 'better' route Lucerne to Lugano? I realize that most of this day will be in transit. No real preference on where we end up this day (and night). Would just like to have some nice scenery, maybe get off the train for lunch, etc.
5) Travel passes are so confusing. Could someone explain why you would have more than 1 pass? I've seen lots of instances where recommendations are for more than 1 pass and it seems to me to add that much more confusion to the mix.
Thanks so much in advance.
