Hi Jane, a couple of things to consider: 1) Switzerland is not in the EU and 2) The EU just made a recommendation. It is up to each country in the EU to decide what to do.

For Switzerland, we need to follow the meetings of the Swiss gov. The next one is Sept. 1.

It's for Unvaccinated Travelers. So if you are vaccinated, you are good to go.

Steve, does the latest post mention unvaccinated? I know the earlier leaked Reuters did.
Just hoping vaccinated folks are ok.
Thx

Yes, the NY Times article from today mentions only unvaccinated have issues and may not be allowed in. Vaccinated people are ok at this time.

It's for Unvaccinated Travelers.

This is incorrect per the official press release.

Anybody who travels soon or is simply trying to keep track of the breaking news should dig into this on their own and not rely on second hand reporting here or anywhere else.

It's for Unvaccinated Travelers.

That's not how I read it.

ok, agree, I read it one way but changes are happening by the hour, so I will just leave it to everyone's own interpretation. Thanks.

Keep in mind that the only accurate sources of info. will be from official government websites. For Switzerland, that is here:

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home/sem/aktuell/faq-einreiseverweigerung.html#-1871257744

Switzerland has been great about posting a press release when any changes come out of their meetings. Those can be found here:

https://www.admin.ch/gov/it/pagina-iniziale/documentazione/comunicati-stampa/comunicati-stampa-consiglio-federale.html?dyn_startDate=01.01.2015

If the info. is not from a gov. site, I would consider it speculation.

Jane, we should hear something at this Wednesday’s meeting.

Non-essential travel to the EU from countries or entities not listed
in Annex I is subject to temporary travel restriction. This is without
prejudice to the possibility for member states to lift the temporary
restriction on non-essential travel to the EU for fully vaccinated
travellers.

Can someone tell me what this means?

Right now, isn't it correct that even travellers coming from countries not on the safe list can still visit if they have proof of vaccination? If I had to predict now, I would say that with proof of vaccination US travellers are going to be ok in the weeks ahead in terms of travel to Switzerland. (and yes I realize prediction and covid related matters are a dangerous mix.)

I will take a stab at it.

The first sentence suggests that member states may restrict non-essential travel for both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers which is what the EU recommends, but the second sentence adds that member states may decide to lift any such restrictions on vaccinated travelers and that is acceptable to the EU, too. Awkward phrasing to say the least, it begs the question of the intent regarding the lifting of restrictions on unvaccinated travelers, too. Just not very clear...

Until individual countries weigh in on this EU recommendation to restrict all non-essential travel from the US, who knows anything? If I was packing a bag for a trip over there in the next few days, and if I was going to be there for some extended period (say more than a a couple of weeks) and also planning to cross EU borders, I would keep my ear to the ground on any changes that might restrict my entry to an EU country in the coming weeks and really foul up my itinerary and any ongoing travel (like catching a flight back home from a country that will no longer let me enter).
