Can I rent a smartphone in Zuerich? I do not own a smartphone but will need one in Switzerland for 7-10 days to get directions and look up train schedules on the Internet. Won’t need to make phone calls or send text messages. Thank you.

If you are not bringing your own portable internet device, then I'd stick to doing things the old-fashioned way, similar to my response on your app question. It just sounds easier and I know it worked for me in the past. Swiss people are very free with information, including train station staff who will print schedules for you, or automated information kiosks in the station. Your hotel might also have a computer that you can use in their lobby.
