Small cabin or mobile home rental - Thun, Lauterbrunnen, Murren

Hi All! We are planning 2 weeks in Switzerland in August (late 40s/early 50s couple with an 7yo and 9yo). and are working on accommodations. We have been to Switzerland before but mainly in Bern and Zurich with a side trip to Thun, and are planning to spend a TBD chunk of our time (5 days? 7 days?) somewhere in between Thun, Lauterbrunnen, or Mürren (but are open to suggestions) and do lifts, trains and busses. We will have a Swiss Pass. I am looking for accommodations similar to Camping Jungfrau - with like a mobile home or small cabin. Ideally, this place would be accessible via boat, bus or walking, have access to a pool (or city pool), have AC and be family friendly (see the 7 yo and 9 yo). So far, I’ve found TCS Gwatt Thurnersee, Camping Junfrau. Any other places to consider that Google hasn’t turned up?

For reference, last summer, we went to several US national parks in AZ, UT, and CO, and stayed in lodges and local hotels at and around Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, and Rocky Mtn. I would love to find something like this.

ETA: glamping? I’d like to have a private WC/shower.

You might have to expand your search to include Grindelwald and Stechelberg. There is a campground at Grindelwald, down toward the river, and they may have “camping cabins” as well as tent sites.

I saw a nice rustic little cabin near Stechelberg on booking.com, with kitchen and bathroom, but it is $500 a night in August.

Maybe look at the three rustic mountain inns you can hike to in the upper Lauterbrunnen Valley, beyond Stechelberg:

Friends of ours stayed at Obersteinberg and really liked the experience. But note that private bathrooms are very rare in this type of Swiss mountain inn. Also, you would have to hike back out to go anywhere else.

Thanks Lola, yeah, $500/ night is a lot. Camping Junfrau looks nice, as does the other one I referenced. I’m alright with a regular hotel as well, just thinking for some more (noise) privacy re my kids.

If the goal in this search is to save money compared to a rental apartment, you may be disappointed. These types of lodgings are highly desirable, and you are looking for peak season. I think you may need to give up AC (very rare in the area) and private showers.

When we were in Brienz last year, I noticed a nice campground right on the lake with little cabins. They require a 7 night stay: https://aaregg.ch/en/Info/Accommodation

Thank you! Goal is not so much to save money as it is researching a style of accommodation. I’m probably looking around $350 USD/night max, give or take.

$500 is indeed lot for that cabin—-I think it was a 1-bdr.

I think prices may have gone up a bit from 2023. Last September we had a very nice, modern, and well-equipped 3-bdr. 2 bath apartment with a balcony and view in Mürren for $390 a night for 6 of us.

Edit; I found that booking.com cabin, just so you can idea of what the market is looking like for this summer. The cabin is really basic, and the price doesn’t even include parking! But the setting is nice.

Maybe it is still available because it is so overpriced.

Hi There,

I walk by TCS Gwatt all the time. Just took a quick look at the video they have on their website and it is very accurate. Be aware that the stacked circular accommodations they have is just two or three steps from the playground - this could be a good for access for your kids, but it is right there and could be noisy at times. The more cabin-like structures are right beside the popular walking path, with a small hedge separating them.

The overall location is very good. On one side there is lakeside walking, a nature park, lots of ducks and geese, great playground, and on the other side is the road (not too busy or too close) where you can catch the bus to the train station, boat dock, and city centre of Thun. It runs every 10 minutes. Close by is the outdoor swimming pools and beach area.

A family we know love to go every year to Manor Farm near Interlaken.

This is right near the boat dock, easy to catch the bus into Interlaken, there is a beautiful nature reserve right there as well with some fun ruins that our kids always loved when they were young. This would be closer to the Lauterbrunnen Valley. I don’t think that they have a swimming pool there, but there is a public beach. It would be easy to take the bus to the outdoor/indoor pools in Interlaken.

You can also explore bnb.ch or take a look at the recommendations on the Swiss tourism website.
