Six days in Switzerland

Hello. My husband and I are planning trip to Switzerland in August. We have been told to skip Zunich and fly into Geneva instead. Thoughts? We love nature and small villages vs large cities. Any thoughts on areas we should visit would be appreciated. We have a total of 6 full days.

I would fly into Zurich and take the train from the airport to lovely town of Luzern. Stay in Luzern a couple of nights include a trip up Mt Pilatus. From Luzern I highly recommend you take the train to Lauterbrunnen via Interlaken Ost. This route has some of the best views in Switzerland. Stay in Lauterbrunnen Valley and marvel at its many waterfalls. From Lauterbrunnen you can visit small villages where cows roam such as Murren and Gimmelwald and access the Schilthorn and other mountains via a train and/or a series of gondolas

I'd check airfares before making a decision. Sometimes there's a substantial difference between the costs to Zurich and Geneva. There's not enough difference in the train time to Lucerne or Lauterbrunnen (for the Berner Oberland) to offset a significant difference in airfare, if there is one.

Yes, fly into wherever you can get the best flights (nonstop?) And price. Zurich is the bigger airport with the most flights, thus most competition, thus best chance of scoring a deal.
You were told (by who) to skip Zurich. I am telling you to skip Geneva. They are both places with international airports and have train stations where you can get trains to anywhere else in the country.

It sounds like either airport will be fine and the flights are prices within a couple of dollars of each other. Any suggestions on a 6 day itinerary ?

I hate to be a Rick Steves copy cat, but you can't go too far wrong doing 3 or 4 days in the Berner Oberland (Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Muerren), then 2 or 3 days in Luzern. Berner Oberland can be got to on the train from Zurich airport in about 2 3/4 hours to Lauterbrunnen, a bit longer to Wengen or Muerren.

From Luzern, you can get to Zurich airport on a direct train in just over 1 hour. No need to set foot in Zurich.

I suggested the reverse order, as it is easy to get to Zurich airport for a flight home (1 hour or so) from Luzern on the day of your flight. Most flights from North America land at Zurich in the morning, so it is no trouble to take the 2 1/2 to 3 hour train ride from Zurich airport to Lauterbrunnen et al.

If you want nature and small villages, you'll be closer to them if you fly in and out of Zurich. Geneva would take an extra hour to go by train to Lauterbrunnen in the Berner Oberland, than Zurich would. And the train ride from Zurich via Lucerne (Luzern) and connecting in Interlaken is full of gorgeous charming mountain lakes with small villages along the way.
