we have a 7 hour layover at Zurich airport upon landing in the morning and we are headed to Rome in the evening. We wanted to shower and drop off our luggage and go into zurich downtown for some sightseeing (if I only have 4-5 hours, how do I make best use of the time?).
Our flights from USA lands in E gates and hence we will be taking a short underground train to the main terminal area. I am clueless after this. The shower areas are I think in D gates. Do you go through passport control and then look for it. I just want to make sure I don't accidentally walk through passport/customs etc and out and then realize it is inside the airport.
Also is the left luggage area after you exit the terminal area in parking? Thanks

So your ticket is not a thru ticket all the way to Rome? You've got 2 tickets with one ending in Zurich and another one starting in Zurich and going to Rome? A 7 hour layover can evaporate quickly if you are delayed for any reason at all. I think you may not actually have enough time to go through passport control, shower, drop off luggage, train into downtown, sightsee then train back, pick up luggage, checkin for next flight, go through security.
