should I go to the dolomites in mid to late october

The Dolomites are in Italy, so you might want to check out that forum. I just asked a similar question, and got a terrific response. I would post a link to it but I don't know how.

Absolutely go. We've been a few times in mid October and loved it. Our experiences during our 3 trips was the weather was very good with very little rain. I remember a brief shower one day out of 11 days over 3 visits. If interested, the Mont Seuc/SeiserAlm cable car from Ortisei up to the wonderful Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi is open until Nov. 2.
