Self trip to Mt. Rigi

trying to get idea of how much round trip is from Lucerne to Mt. Rigi, boat, cogwheel etc and return without any discounts? Don’t want to go on tour. Do ourselves but trying to figure out costs comparisons. Thanks

www.sbb.ch/en. Put on Luzern to Rigi Kulm and via Vitznau. Use the procedure I outlined in your other post. Double that for a round trip. Choose the route that starts with "BAT" (a boat).

PS: It is 80 CHF each way.

This is a trip for which getting a Saver Day Pass in advance is a good option. But you need to buy it early to get a good price. The SDP starts at 59,- without an reduction cards.

Depending on where else you travel in Switzerland, the Half- Fare card or STP may be helpful . Enjoy this beautiful country. Safe travels!

I am going to explain a bit more about the Saver Day Pass that was suggested by WengenK because this is the cheapest option for you if you act soon.

The SDP covers all train, bus and boat rides as well as some gondola rides. The map showing the coverage is here, and it includes going up Rigi. To see this scroll in closer on Luzern and you will see Rigi Kulm with solid lines for the routes up there, this means full coverage.

https://www.sbb.ch/en/tickets-offers/travelcards/area-validity-map.html

A Saver Day Pass is sold starting at six months before your travel date. There are limited amounts at the lowest price. As those sell out it becomes more and more expensive. That is why you try and buy one as soon as it becomes available (ie. six months before your travel date).

You can purchase them without a half fare card, in which case they start as low as CHF 52.00.

Take a look here to read about them, and choose “purchase online” to find your specific travel dates and what is still available for those dates. If you are traveling in later May then look as soon as your date opens up to get the cheapest price.

Swiss nomad-so still confused but thank you for trying to make it clearer. The Saver day pass price is per day correct? so if we arrive off of boat in Basel-train to Lucerne-3 days in Lucerne, Rigi, etc. train to Zurich-whatever in Zurich yet to be determined. We would need Saver day pass everyday for 6 days? Is it Justine pass that we keep using or different pass for each day? so would need to compare 6 days of SDP vs STP? Do you know if SdP covers any of the cogwheel trains in Oberland area? Or falls? Thanks

The SDP covers, just like the STP, everything in the GA area, shorthand for General Abonnement area. That is inhabited locations. It does cover the Stanserhorn and cogwheel train and lifts to Rigi Kulm. In the B.O., that is to Muerren and Wengen, but no higher. In addition, the STP gives discounts on these higher lifts, but the SDP does not. The STP also covers some museum admissions, which the SDP does not

The SDP is really good for a single day or 2 with lots of travel. Not really for several days in a row, and not with mountain lifts other than the few mentioned.

If you are going to be doing a lot of travel for 6 days you should get the Swiss Travel Pass. If you are not doing a lot of travel just buy tickets. It is not mandatory to get a day pass.
If your estimated spend is more than 240,- get the Half Fare Card, as that gives you 50% off for 120,-

Thanks so much. It is all very confusing and I am very good with planning trips but for some reason this is getting complicated lol. Because there are so many different ways to get different tix and this far in advance makes it challenging to get accurate prices.

prices you see on official channels for Swiss transportation are likely to not vary much, neither is travel frequency or duration. It may be a few minutes one way or the other, and the price may follow inflation, and you just need the sbb.ch/en website no matter the mode or operator. There may be a few sparpreis tickets but disregard those. Have a look a couple of weeks out, that should give you a really good idea.

Hi flgajaja,

The Saver Day Pass is valid for one day only.

Based on your other post I thought you were in Switzerland for just a few days. Basel-Luzern-Zürich. You didn’t mention going to the Berner Oberland.

Basel - Luzern buy a ticket just before traveling. Full fare is 36.00.

3 days in Luzern - depending on what you will do, you don’t need to buy a pass at all, but a Saver Day Pass at 52.00 will allow you to go on the boat and up Rigi or Stanserhorn at a very good price.

Luzern - Zürich full fare ticket is 27.00. Purchase before getting on the train.

The SDP is really good for a single day or 2 with lots of travel. Not
really for several days in a row

It has to do with how much travel you are doing on any given day, and where you will go. It has nothing to do with how many days you are traveling. Of course you can get one for each day, several days in a row. Why not?

Some people just like the convenience of a pass and are willing to pay more for that, but for sure you will be overpaying by quite a bit on your Basel - Luzern and Luzern - Zürich days, and possibly your time in Luzern as well, but it all depends on what you will do while you are there.
