I'm searching for a really memorable location to propose to my girlfriend when we visit Switzerland for the first time this July. I was thinking the Berner Oberland region would be a great place to start, but I'd love to find a memorable, yet reasonably accessible location to do this and there seem to be so many great options. We are both hikers, so something off the beaten path would be fine.
What a lovely idea! My suggestion will be in Zermatt, however.
Last September we took a trek that might offer an opportunity for you. We took the underground funicular to Sunnegga, then Rothorn and Oberrothorn lifts. We hiked back to Sunnegga (Marmot Way) and on down the Gourmet Weg stopping for lunch at Chez Vrony. Chez Vrony is Michelin rated and you eat sitting in full view of the Matterhorn. You cannot drive there. Perhaps just before you reach the lunch spot, you can stop in a scenic spot and pop the question, the celebrate over lunch. Do reserve!
george,
The Berner Oberland would be a great location for a marriage proposal, and there are lots of possibilities. Would you prefer somewhere secluded with more emphasis on the gorgeous scenery, or somewhere there may be other people around?
One location that's somewhat "quiet" and yet easily accessible is THIS small valley, which you can access by taking the Allmend-Hubel Funicular up from Mürren and then hiking down (it's an easy hike as even I can do it).
Another thought would be to hike a short distance from Lauterbrunnen and use the waterfalls as a scenic backdrop.
Of course if you're really adventurous, you could consider both taking simultaneous tandem Paragliding rides from Mürren and ask her while you're both airborne. Have a word with the Pilots beforehand so they know what the plan is. Just a thought.....
Good luck!
Thank you for the great suggestions, I have several options to consider now!
Get out your GoogleMaps! Sulsseewli is a remote alpine lake about a 2-hour hike from Isenfluh in the B.O. The hike and lake are spectacular. In July the meadow flowers should be in bloom. 46°37'02.6"N 7°51'48.5"E
I did the hike in 2009 so I may be forgetting some details, but I think you take a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Isenfluh. From there you take a cable car up and start the hike up. I forget the name of the cable car station.
George,
My thread might help you some also. I bought the book that was recommended and received it today. I have started reading it and it is pretty good.

Ebenalp.
Propose on the hill above, behind and around the cable car station, looking over the cliff at the Marwees across the valley.
Stay below at Gasthaus Aescher, have Roesti and desert outside before moving inside for coffee and more drinks (or deserts!). Stay in a small room. Remember to get reservations!
I can tell you from personal experience that Murren is an ideal location (I did this last year). I'm sure you can figure out how you would like to pop the question from your own style and relationship, but there will be many options and locations in/around Murren that are all incredible. You will not be disappointed if you decide on Murren.
