I am traveling from Zurich to Bolzano Italy on Sunday in June and the Eurail website recommends that I pay extra to reserve a seat from Zurich to Innsbruck Hbf (Austria), $9.5 and from Innsbruck to Bolzano Bozen (Italy), $14.30. Is it necessary? Is the train usually full on a Sunday for this route? Thank you!
Hard to predict. For $24 why not be sure you have a seat.
You can a seat reservation for the whole trip for 3 EUR (about $3.60 US) at www.oebb.at/en
As a good rule of thumb:
- For central European (Germanic influenced) countries you can get your reservations easily directly with the railway, as the railways for German, Austria Switzerland etc. still separate tickets from reservations. Thew other thing is that when you book directly with the railways it usually a single fee per trip, even if there are multiple trains involved.
For "latin" countries, eg Spain, France and Italy the best place is in my experience Rail Europe.
The Eurail reservation system has the habit of adding lots of extra charges...
