Schilthorn Cable Car Tickets

Hi all. My partner and I are spending five days in Wengen, May 23-27, and based on recommendations from this forum, have planned the following for one of our days: Wengen>Lauterbrunnen>Stechelberg>Murren>Schilthorn for a quick look>Murren> Allemndhubel>Northface hike counterclockwise>back to Lauterbrunnen for dinner>Wengen.

Can we wait to buy our cable car tickets when we get to Wengen? We don’t want to buy early and then have weather that doesn’t cooperate. And how early should we get our day started?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't buy the tickets in advance. Buy them at the cable car station. The cable car station has a weather cam and you can see whether or not it is clear at the top.

In all your posts about this trip to Switzerland, you have not said what your ticket strategy will be. Are you getting a Swiss Travel Pass, a Half Fare Card, a Berner Oberland Pass? All this will effect what you have to pay and how much.

That's all good to know and very helpful for all of our hiking in the area.

We have purchased the Swiss Travel pass.

Then all you need to purchase is a round trip Muerren to Schilthorn and one way on the Allmendhubel. You get a 50% discount with the Swiss Travel Pass. Tickets are good all day.

Been here for two days now, Interlaken. It is a winter wonderland right now in the high country. Been snowing for two days at the higher elevations and the visibility has been near zero. Did a hike from Giessbach to Iseltwald yesterday. Higher elevation stuff has been a no go due to poor weather conditions. FYI a few weeks ago places like Stoos, Stanserhorn, Rigi, etc were greening up. Spring / Summer was in the air. When we arrived in Lucerne on 11 May it started snowing that night at all of those places. They received nearly 4 inches of snow. We might try Schilthorn today if the weather breaks. Going to take the train to Lauterbrunnen and bus to Stechelberg and see how it looks. Sunday looks like a better day and may try to get up to Junfraujoch. Still having a good time despite challenging weather conditions. I will leave with one final thought with respect to the cost of everything here. Self service laundry in Lucerne was 10 chf per wash load and 8 chf per dryer. Two loads of self service laundry nearly $50. In Interlaken the wash load is 14 chf. Bring lots of money.

Don't buy them at the cable car station. Buy whatever tickets you need already at the station in Wengen. You can buy a return ticket Wengen - Schilthorn without issue.

Note that the Grütschalp - Lauterbrunnen cable car is down for renovation, so you will have to return via the same route you came.

Schilthorn can be quite spectacular even in bad weather. I went up last week, and at one time the cable car was just suspended between two layers of clouds...

They have self service machines at the Mürren cable car station. Since you’ll have the Swiss Travel Pass, travel there for free that morning and look at the live webcam tvs in the station + weather on MeteoSwiss app. If all is looking promising, purchase your ticket then. If not, then just enjoy Mürren/Gimmelwald/Allmendhubel. You can also easily get your ticket for Allmendhubel at the little ticket counter.

Thanks Wanderweg. That's what we were planning on doing based on all the comments, so thanks for that confirmation of our plans!
