Our trip seems to be right around the corner. Thanks to the wonderful advice on this forum our itinerary has gone through a number of changes. We (my 2 teen daughters and I) will be in Switzerland beginning on June 19 (flying into Zurich from a nearby country). At this point we have reservations in Lucerne from the 19th through the night of the 21st. The night of the 25th we need to be in Venice.
We are not serious hikers, but certainly enjoy natural beauty. We love museums, but recognize you can only see so many in one trip. We are strictly gluten-free (Celiac), so that always plays a role in decision-making (We are pretty well versed in many of the options available to us, but always appreciate additional recommendations.) I plan to obtain the Swiss rail pass with the accompanying children passes.
I need help deciding what to do with our time from the morning of the 22nd until our need to be in Venice on June 25 (I am aiming for 5pm - ish). I have pretty strong desire to do one of the scenic railroad trips, but am having trouble deciding which one or even whether to do it. I know Rick seems to favor the Golden Pass, but then I read other members of this forum highly tout the Glacier Express.
Some ideas I have toyed with:
Move south from Lucerne and stay the last couple of days in the Lugano/Lake Como region to make our eventual trip to Venice easier.
Take the Glacier Express ending in the St. Mortitz area and travel from there to Venice via Austria.
Take whichever train from Lucerne-Interlaken-Zermatt and stay there the last couple of days before heading to Venice.
Take the Golden Pass route from Lucerne to Montreux then move to Zermatt for a night or two before heading to Venice.
Move towards Geneva (I have a friend there) and fly to Venice from there (not sure what we would do between Lucerne and Geneva).
Go stay in the Lauterbrunnen Valley ( I know this is highly favored on this forum, but I am considering leaving this for the "next time".)
There seem to be so many options, I am having trouble figuring one out. I welcome other ideas.
Thanks for your input!
