I'm in Luzern and will be heading to Zermatt tomorrow. Two days later, we're going to Murren. Figuring out how to do that isn't a problem, but I was hoping to incorporate some of the scenic/panoramic trains in to my travel. We have Swiss Travel passes. Any advice on how to do that? If I need to take indirect routes, that wouldn't bother me. Thanks
Here is a rail map with the scenic routes highlighted in color.
One possibility would be on your way to Zermatt from Luzern: Luzern to Andermatt by Treno Gottardo (change at Göschenen), then Andermatt to Zermatt on the Glacier Express (or regional trains on the same tracks, but you will have one or more changes along the way).
Then, instead of the quickest way from Zermatt to Muerren (via Visp and the Loetschberg Base Tunnel) to Spiez, go to Brig and take the old route with the "Loetschberger" regional train to Spiez. This uses the older, shorter Loetschberg Tunnel and goes mostly over the mountains instead of completely under them, like the fast route. Use the SBB route planner and put in via Kandersteg.
Thanks for the replies. I considered the route you mentioned, Lola. However the timing would have cut into our Zermatt time considerably. I think we wouldn't have gotten here until late afternoon. I'm glad we got up early and took the most direct route. We had a great day in Zermatt and up at Gornegrat. It was only a partial Zermatt day, but it felt like a full day.
PS, this country is awesome.
