scenic route or the quick one.

We will be driving from Apenzell to Fusssen, Germany next weekend. I've noticed we can probably go the direct freeway route or the indirect scenic route maybe through Liechenstein. Are we wrong to choose the scenic route? We have the whole day to make the trip and I thought we should see as much of the scenery as we can, but I don't know if the roads will be too slow or the traffic too heavy. Any suggestions? Thanks

I haven't driven this particular scenic route but whenever we have time we choose the more scenic (slow?) route. We've driven a lot of scenic routes in this are and have never regretted it. For us, our trips are as much about what's in-between as what's at the end of the drive.

If you have a couple of decent maps, I would start the scenic route and see how it goes. The scenic routes can get to be a bit tedious after a while and you can switch over to the direct freeway route. You could also hit bad weather and have the issue forced that way. The trick is to plan flexibly because we never know when our old friend Murphy will pop up.

Which route are you calling "scenic"? You can take the route via Bregenz and Lindau along the edge of the Bodensee, then cut across the Alpenstraße to Füssen, or travel south to Feldkirche, then up through the Alps via either Lech or Imst, on to Reutte. The scenery along either option is stunning. Whether or not to go through Liechtenstein makes no difference in the scenery. You'll still drive through the same valley anyway.

Traffic is pretty unpredictable. Whether or not you hit a Stau depends on road construction and accidents.
