Scenic place to visit/stay in Switzerland on our way from Munich to Milan

Hello fellow travelers,

My husband and I are visiting Europe in September 2017. We are flying into Milan....renting a car the whole time. Going from Milan to Bologna to Venice to Salzburg to Munich to Milan (total 11 days). We will be in Munich during Oktoberfest and then driving to Neuschwanstein Castle for a quick visit. I'm looking for recommendations on what to do with the two overnights we have left before we head back to Milan and fly back to U.S. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the two overnights left. Should we go to Altorf and take Road 2 to Milan (passing Lugano or Lucarno) OR go through Parc Ela/Naturpark Beverin taking Road 13 to 2 to Milan? Other suggestions are welcome. Looking for more of a scenic (maybe short hike)/beautiful car ride to Milan. Somewhere with beautiful views of the Alps. Maybe a stereotypical old small town with stone streets and small shops and good food and chocolate. Recommendations on where to stay are appreciated; prefer B&Bs, small Austrian owned hotel, etc. (NOT Americanized hotels). We don't necessarily have to see old museums or churches but like to be in places that represent an authentic Austrian town and experience. What do you think of going to Zugspitze and taking the cable cars to the top of the mountain and eating in the beer garden at the top of the mountain? Thanks so much, in advance, for your input and advice.

Altorf? That's way too far.
Just take the A96 then the A13 and A2 through Switzerland. A13 is very scenic and also the portion through lake Lugano.

Using Rome2Rio.com I come up with roughly 21 hours of driving if you make Lugano your Swiss stop. That amount of driving and five major cities seems like a LOT of territory for 10 nights/11 days. That gives you an average of two nights in each of 5 locations and if you add Lugano, I guess you are only planning some one-night stops. To me, that is moving fast and not having time to explore. Have you really plotted out how long each leg will take you to drive and whether that leaves you enough time for your planned activities?
