Hi,
I will land in Zurich on the first week in October for 6 days and plan to purchase a Saver Day Pass (SDP) for the first day traveling to Wengen from Zurich airport. I looked on SBB website today, the SDP costs CHF54 and the one-way train ticket to Wengen from Zurich Flughafen costs CHF46 with the Half Fare Travel Card (HFT). Not sure if it helps to purchase the SDP at this point given the unknow weather forecast for the remaining half day.
Also, do I need to purchase the HFT first before I can purchase the SDP and/or the Berner Oberland pass?
Your thoughts and travel experiences are much appreciated. Thanks.
The SDP costs 54 CHF bought now with the Half Fare Card, but as you can see, with the Half Fare Card, the point to point ticket is 46 CHF, so no reason to buy the SDP if you have the HFC.
But to your other question, you do not need to have the HFC to buy the SDP for a particular date at the HF price, you just need to have the HFC in your possession when you travel. So you could buy an SDP now at the HF price and then buy the HFC when you arrive. Same is true for the Berner Oberland Pass. You can buy now at the HF price, then buy the HFC when you arrive. When you show the ticket or pass, you also show your HFC to show that you are entitled to the HF price.
There is very little you could do with the SDP once you get to Wengen, as it doesn’t include mountain transport to uninhabited places (Mannlichen, Kleine Scheidegg, etc). By the time you get to Wengen and drop off your luggage it’s best to just wander the village, maybe take a small walk from town, etc. Trying to plan a big activity after a long travel day isn’t going to be fun.
@Sam and @Wanderweg, your responses and reasoning are well taken given the timing and location, thank you.
