route help

Hello! We are traveling through switzerland via milan. As of now, here is our plan. Milan ---> Lucerne area ----> lauterbrunnen---->???

We want to make our way back to milan now but the direct trains and buses take forever to get from the lautrebrunnan/grindelwal area back to milan. Does anyone have a destination along the way that would be easy to travel to as we make our way back to milan?? (We will be traveling with young kids and older grandparents so we are trying to avoid super long rides)

Also, I see sometimes on the map things are close if you drove. Are there are cars for hire companies people know/trust that we could maybe use if we wanted to go somewhere that was far by train but close by car? lugano interests me but looks like such a long ride hence my desire to maybe find something on the way??

I would love any and all help!!

I have taken that train a couple times. The reason it is a long ride is it travels right through the Alps so it is a slow climb up and down the mountains. It is a VERY scenic journey!! We did not stop along the way but had plenty of things to look at and it did not seem long to us. There are several towns to stop in if you wanted to stretch your legs and break up the ride.

Do you have any recommendations of places to stop along the way? I feel like I would be unlikely to want to do that with kids and luggage to deal with but if there is something awesome I'd be game to hear about it!!

From Lauterbrunnen, train to Interlaken Ost, then train to Spiez. At Spiez there is a direct train to Milan at 8:05 am, 12:05 pm, 2:05 pm and 7:05 pm.

Lauterbrunnen to Milano is about 3 1/2 hours. That is not "forever". Also be aware that things may appear to be close but aren't really because of the geography. A car from Lauterbrunnen to Milano will not be faster, and will actually need to be put on a train for part of the route...

I think your main issue is that you are not using the proper sites for planning. For train travel use www.sbb.ch. When are you travelling? If your trip is some months in the future do use a date in the next week for trip planning. Train schedules for trips months from now may not be available yet. But they rarely change...

We have taken that trip many times in each direction and did not find it long I particular. It is three trains as pointed out by Sam, but the transfer are easy. Just make sure you reserve for one of the direct trains Sam mentions. Bring lunch on board, if you like. There is a little bakery on the lower level in Spiez where you can get sandwiches and pastries.
