Road trip with kids

Hello all,

I am an American expat living in Belgium. We've traveled a little in the 7 months we've lived here but I am ready to branch out. Since I am now a stay at home Dad I wanted to take advantage of the weeks off my kids have this spring. My wife cannot afford the vacation time so I am planning a trip with my two boys, 4 and 7. To start we are heading to Legoland in Germany. We'll spend a day and a half before heading towards Switzerland. Plan is to stop off in Austria to sleep then head through to Lucerne via Liechtenstein (just to check it off the list). Will spend 1/2 day in Lucerne then head towards Chillon Castle. Here is where I am looking for advice. Sites to see in Lucerne and around Chillon Castle. Thinking about a train and/or boat ride on Lake Geneva. Of course the Castle. I really don't know what I don't know. I am trying to research but don't want to miss the opportunity to see things while there.

Finally our ride home will include a night in Luxembourg. Would love advice for Lux as well.

Dank u wel!

Day trip from Luzern/Lucerne is Titlis: http://www.titlis.ch/en
This is serious kid impressive. Cable cars, adult-scaring drops and glaciers (go inside and over). If you are doing this by car go direct to Engelberg (at the bottom of the cable car) and stay overnight.
Chillon Castle is a grown ups place, nothing spectacular, just pretty.
Do your boat ride on Lake Lucerne/Vierwaldstättersee
On your way north from Switzerland stop off at Haut Koenigsbourg castle: http://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/en/

Alright, I spent more than a month with my 5(& 1/2) year-old daughter last summer (June/July/August) and loved it.

I would say a couple of things, some of which you may know very well.

First...coming from Germany or Liechtenstein or Austria...stop in Fiesch for the night, maybe instead of staying in Germany (unless you are going to Fuessen/Neuschwanstein--which ALL kids would love). Fiesch is at the end of the Binntal. Stay in the Sports Ferein Resort if you are on a budget and prepare to be impressed. Here is a link to their 'sports center facilities'. Use of the pools (yes, a BIG, VERY DEEP pool and a large but shallow pool), weights, etc. And a Seilpark/Rope Park that is super cool. I would say perfect for the 7 year-old but a little old for the 4 year-old. This place helps to train Olympic Athletes seasonally and used to be a military hospital. http://www.sport-ferienresort.ch/en/media/images-gallery/sports-facilities Look at their facilities and then click on 'Accomodations'. Good prices. Stay here and hike in the Binn Valley. You could hike to the Binntalhuette or just go and see Binn, Elmer, and Heiligikreuz. Great hiking and crystals--just on the ground.

From Luzern I would go to Pilatus. Go however you want:

  1. Bus to Kriens from Luzern via Bus (15 mins) from the Luzern Bus/Train station. Then Kriens to Fraekmuentegg via 4-person cable car. Fraekmuentegg ( http://www.pilatus.ch/en/pilatus-active/summer/fun-action/ ) is a FUN place to go. From there you can go on up to Pilatus via a 50-person cable-car and then come back down the same way. Otherwise...

  2. You can go up to Pilatus via the 50-person cable car and then come down the cogwheel train on the other side. From there, Alpnachtstad, you can return via boat (steamer anyone?) to Luzern.

  3. Or you can do it in reverse. My favorite, Luzern>boat>Alpnachtstad>cogwheel train>Pilatus>50-person cable car>Fraekmuentegg (FUN!)>4-person cable car>Kriens>bus>Luzern.

Someone does maintain a list of playgrounds in Zurich (maybe elsewhere). I will try to post it if I can find it.

Take a potty, like from Ikea (we always pick one up in Zurich). It is handy to be able to stop--anywhere, put some TP in the bottom, have them go, then toss it out. Sometimes finding an actual bathroom can be difficult, like a public restroom on Bourbon St. during Mardi Gras. Some little people have not perfected the squat-in-the-woods defecation method and this makes it a lot easier if they just can' hold it. With boys it will be so much easier for the other half at least.

Stop and let them run around. Being cooped-up sucks ;0

what a great Dad! fun and energetic aged boys.....consider what they would like, really. Leggo land needs 2 full days with those ages, its big. That would be a trip in itself rather than combining it with your other plans. You can stay there too, very fun.

I have travelled with 10 - 12 year olds for long 3 hour train trips and that's about their limit if you are travelling back the same day, then its 6 hours in the train plus some changeovers - takes lots of snacks they like as the train stations a re buzy and you only have 2 hands.

If you want to visit Chillion becuase its a catle, why not see something closer in Germany? there are so many there that are as big, bigger and fun as Chillon. I love Chillon, but I am thinking of the young guys. Eg Classic Wartberg or check out other castle on route to Leggo land.

Now for Switzerland, a stay in Lauterbrunnen makes an easy base with young ones.. Rick Steves has many good things to say about the area, Gimmelwald the guys will like Take cable car to Gimmelwald and cable car to Murren and then hike down to Gimmelwald.
Alternatively, you can make a loop:
• Cableway to Grutschalp then the little train along the cliff to Muerren (we often walk instead of taking the train, a nice 90-minute hike)
• Take a hike or go to the Schilthorn or both from Muerren. Also a great lunch stop.
• Walk down to Ginmmelwald after experiencing Muerren (20 minutes)
• Take the cableway down to the valley and the bus back to Lauterbrunnen

Also Mürren Children's Adventure Trail The Allmendhubel funicular in the center of town takes you up to a huge "Flower Park" playground and restaurant and the trailhead for a few trails, including the Children's Adventure Trail. The trail is a little over 2km and should take about an hour. It's not stroller-friendly, as the trail is mostly a narrow, lumpy, dirt or grass path. It's mostly downhill, so it won't be difficult for children that are confident hikers. It's a good choice for families that want to hike while admiring the big famous peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch.

Wet weather days ideas, a short train and bus ride to Beautenberg caves, where the kids need to look out for the dragon.
or inside a mountain to see a waterfall in Lauterbrunnen.

Our course there is the exciting Top of Europe trip, there is also a chocolate exhibition there. A full day trip, but check out the views, Jungfrau web cam
So many things to explore in this area that are Child friendly. like the outdoor Ballenberg museum

Thank you all for the great advice. Here is my updated rough plan:

Monday: We are leaving home very early to get to Legoland for the afternoon. Staying in a themed cottage at the park.
Tuesday: All day at the park then staying in Dornbirn, Aus.
Wednesday: Off to Lucerne to do the loop via train, hike, boat, etc. Kids will be tired so not going to over plan the day. Sight see and enjoy life.
Thursday: Start working our way back home with a stop over in Luxembourg City.
Friday: Stopoever in Bastogne to see a different museum then home.

I have the different playgrounds and sights if we find ourselves with energy and time. I really want to see the Glacier waterfalls in the caves. I will add that to a list for when we return with my wife. Chillon Castle will also wait for that trip.
