We have booked our Christmas cruise for 2024. The cruise departs from Basel and will have stops in France ending in Germany. We would like to spend additional time in Switzerland before the cruise. 2-3 days. Do we stay in Basel and do day trips to other cities or spend a night and explore another area? Any advice is appreciated.

Basel itself can be interesting, with a pleasant old town and nice museums. I do prefer either Luzern or Bern, though, and I would opt to stay there instead. Luzern is the more "classic" choice.

Are you flying into Zurich? If so, go spend your early days in Luzern (1.25 hours by rail from the airport). Basel and Bern are nice, but they are not in the mountains, and Luzern is. Plenty to do there.
