Looking for recommendations for restaurants in Basel - for early August - $-$$ - do not necessarily need to be Swiss cuisine.

We were looking for something casual and reasonable in price ( like your $-$$) and chose the Italian restaurant Vapiano.
It is a chain started in Germany I think. They have “stations” where you go and order pasta, salad, pizza, etc. and they make it right in front of you to order. The pasta is fresh not dried. And other ingredients are good quality. I would happily go back when wanting something “cheap and cheerful” ( and tasty) instead of the local Swiss cuisine.

It is definitely off the tourist trail, it where the local workers from the Post Office sorting office dine.
The food is good and the price is right.
