I'm not an expert for Zürich but here's what I know in terms of restaurants:

  • "Movies" (Beatenplatz 4) never been to it but my Zürich dwelling relatives tried to go there with me. Unfortunately the large outdoor area was closing due to impending rain and they were already full inside
  • "Casa Mia" (Werdmühleplatz 3) we went there instead. Good Italian food.
  • "tibits" (Seefeldstrasse 2) been to this vegetarian restaurant with friends once. As an omnivore it was fascinating to see what you can do with vegetarian cuisine. I liked it.

This being Zürich, expect higher prices. Can't really recommend you anything for a new year eve's dinner but I do recommend you make your way to the lake (ideally near Bürkliplatz and Quaibrücke) at midnight to watch the amazing fireworks show. Speaking of which: You could book one of the new years eve cruises which will conveniently park on the lake in time for the fireworks.

We were there several years ago and had very good meals at Helvetia, Restaurant Markthalle, and Zum Wiessen.

I haven't been to Zurich, but my most memorable meals in Lausanne and Luzern were at Manora (I see from their website that there's one in Zurich). It's a restaurant in the Manor department store. A bit like a Las Vegas buffet, you go to stations where the food is prepared fresh for you (so if you want fish, a raw piece is taken off the ice and fried fresh for you - not waiting hours on a steam table). The food was high quality and half the price of a regular restaurant with table service. The only problems are: 1) it's not a secret, and is always mobbed - the Swiss know it's a great bargain, and 2) it's only open department store hours, which means early dinner Monday through Friday, no dinner on Saturdays, and no meals at all on Sundays.

I ate at the Tibits in Luzern's train station, and it was a good vegetarian buffet. It was inexpensive, and open Sunday (for both lunch and dinner) when Manora was closed.
