Reservations or advance ticket purchase needed for schilthorn or Jungfraujoch trips?

My wife and I will be traveling to the Berner Oberland region the last week in July and the first week in August. We are staying in Lauterbrunnen, and would like to take the train to the top of Jungfraujoch one day, and to the Schilthorn summit another day. Do we need to by tickets in advance to guarantee we can take these trips? Or can we buy tickets the day(s) of the trips? Also- we will have half fare cards... can they be used for these?

No advance purchase needed and yes the HFC applies. Go early for best views.

Do not buy tickets in advance as the weather can really spoiled that. You should decide the day of and the first trip schedule in the morning is probably the best.

Passes: The best practice is to read thoroughly all the benefits before you commit to buy. It turns out that the Half Fare Card gives you 50% off the Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraubahn (Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch) has a system I found confusing yesterday. There are multiple lines: one for groups, one for reservations (green signs), and one for the rest of us (yellow signs). Waiting to head back down, it looked worrisome because the groups kept arriving and then the green-sign people just about filled a very small train while the rest of us waited. Turned out there was a separate train for the yellow-sign group right around the corner.

If you are staying in Lauterbrunnen, the first lift to Grutshalp (followed by a very scenic train to Murren) leaves at 7:13 am. That is before the first train full of tourists arrives from Interlaken. It was glorious at the summit early in the morning, and you'll beat both the crowds and the clouds up to the top! (And go right to the 007 brunch- being so early, we were seated with no reservation)
