Reservations on Bernina and other trains

I am totally confused.

I have bought 2 through tickets for:
Freiburg- Tirano. I will be catching this train from Landquart.
However, I haven't purchased any reservation for the Bernina train from Chur to Tirano, the D 951 @8:32.
Have I to compulsory buy reservation because D951 is listed as one of my trains?
The ticket for this is called "Europa Specialz".

Can I book the reservation later at the station on the day of my travel? Will it be expensive to purchase reservation on the day?

I do not think you will have a problem, but the sooner you do it the better to insure the whole family can sit together. If I recall, it was 10 chf per person in January each direction on the actual Bernina Express trains. Not sure about children. These trains have panorama cars. Regular trains do the route without reservations, but requiring some train changes on the way. Any train marked "D" is a Bernina Express on that route.

Thanks Sam.

From your reply, it seems that I must book reservations asap for both journeys as I have bought the " Europa Specialz" and that route includes the D 951 & D 950 BEX trains.

However, looking at my ticket, it states as follows:
Order Details (No .: ZCLVVD)
Sat, 05/30/15
One way, Europe Special / Europe Spec. Switzerland, 2nd class. 2 Ad., 3 child (-er).,

  1. In this, I cannot see the connection for Chur/ Basel SBB. Do I need to buy it separately?
  2. Looking at the paper ticket, it says, I have no reservation. For this reason, I called the D bahn, who are not helpful either. Their email reply and the response over the phone are contradicting too, as per my understanding.

I just need to make sure that all train have been paid for throughout the journey, Tirano / Karlsruhe with seats available as the journey is a long one.

Quoting from seat61.com, "travel in the regular seats in the 3-car Allegra unit up front which pulls the Bernina Express panoramic carriages."

So what I need to know now is does the train D950 include 3- car Allegra unit with regular seats which I can travel on?????

I think you are OK. On the Bernina Express you have seats in Wagon No 4. Looks like they have some seats that are 3 and 3 with the aisle on the outside, may be a semi compartment. I can't access the actual train diagram. They add and subtract cars according to the bookings. The trains from Chur to Zurich and Zurich to Basel are not shown because there are no seat reservations offered on those trains. They are just open seating. The train from Basel to Karlsruhe has reservations available and you have them. The current price for your party on that date and train is 61 chf with a "Europa Spezial", so that looks good.

Reading through the seat61, I see now how you did this. 2 adult tickets at 29 euro each plus 3.90 euro mailing fee, purchased from Deutsche Bahn. Seat61 says you still need to pay the reservation fee which is another 14 chf per person, but I assume does not apply to your children under 16. You have seats reserved, but it is more of a supplement for the panoramic train. Anyway, check at the station.
Edit- I followed the seat61 procedure for the rhb.ch sight and it appears each passenger needs a seat reservation. That comes to 70 chf each way.

Hello there,

The information you have given is a bit confusing... you start out saying you have a ticket from Freiburg, but then say you will join the train at Landquart??? This type of ticket is cheap, but usually comes with restrictions - have you checked that you can join the train in Landquart?

As for the Bernina, D951 only requires reservations for the panorama wagon (Panoramawagen: Reservierung obligatorisch), but the ticket information you posted suggest that you are covered in any case.

Jim.

From seat61.com, I gathered that tickets can be purchased from Freiburg to Tirano and one can simply not travel from Freiburg and join from Zurich. So, my travel from Landquart is perfectly legitimate and the d bahn personnel have confirmed it.

Anyways, for your kind consideration and time to reply, I thank you.
