Reservations and Tickets: Golden Pass Montreux to Interlaken

So I see that there is now a direct line from Montreux to Interlaken ... it looks like it is currently running just once a day but it WILL be running several times a day by the end of July.

We are going in September, so thought it would make sense to reserve a seat till the exact route we want is available -- but also don't want to miss out if the trains sell out quickly... Also, we are using Eurail, so I believe I need to buy a reservation but I do NOT need to buy a ticket??

Question: when does it make sense to reserve, and -- which of their various trains do you recommend? was considering panoramic without any of the fancy chocolates or cheeses etc.! Finally, which side of the train is best traveling east?

Many thanks!!

Reservations are not compulsory on that route. So with a pass you can just get on. This is actually a normal service train, used by locals to go about their everyday business. It is marketed to tourists as well in order to fill the trains better.

Note that if you want the direct trains (the one's that do not require changing in Zweisimmen) your only choice is the Golden Pass Express. The others all require a transfer.

Sounds like you are thinking that the Golden Pass Express would be your first choice. That would be mine as well, but I think that any train along this route is great. And yes, you can always just bring along your own chocolate and cheese 😄😋

For most of the journey both sides of the train are great. Once you hit Spiez the lake will be on the left hand side - more scenic for that section, but I wouldn’t sweat it, it's always possible to get up and go to the doors of the train car to see and/or photograph any view you want.
