Per this forum I have concluded I will not be bringing my collapsible hiking poles in my carry on plane luggage (not checking any bags). Does anyone have suggestions as to where to rent them in Zermatt? Or is it only a purchase option. They are most helpful for me when hiking down!

I believe most sport shops will have them for rent. Intersport has several locations in Zermatt; this one is on Bahnhofstrasse 19:

If you are looking at a website in German, the hiking poles are “Wanderstock” and “to rent” is mieten.

Have you checked with your hotel? Many hotels offer hiking poles, rucksacks, umbrellas etc. free of charge to guests.
