Hi ! We are wanting to travel from Varenna Italy, to Murren, Switzerland…where we will spend 5 days. Originally I thought we could take the Bernina & Glacier express trains. Then I read your input on the regional trains & I found many more & reasonable time options. What does one lose in taking these trains instead? Do they take the same route? Is it ridiculous to try to do this all in one day?? (I found it is possible, but we don’t want to go so Fast that we miss the beauty)!
What would you suggest?
Thanks for your help!

The Swiss regional trains are very comfortable and clean, and less crowded, and require no seat reservation. The windows open for great picture taking. The regional trains run on the exact same tracks as the panoramic trains. The regional trains stop more, but in Switzerland, the stops are very quick. We rode the Bernini Express route on the regional trains, and were very happy. The scenery is incredible, and on a less crowded train, you can jump from one side of the train to the other, as the scenery changes. Safe travels!
If you don't mind spending 12 1/2 hours and making 9 transport changes, it is doable. Best route appears to involve taking the postbus from Andermatt to Meiringen. Leave Varenna at 7:25 am and arriving at Muerren at 7:58 pm. I'd tend to say take 2 days to make this journey, Varenna to Chur, then Chur to Muerren.
