Recommended base city: Triberg-Switzerland city?-Aosta

Travel date: August-September 2024

Can someone help me fill in the missing blank. I’m looking for a decent halfway point/city as well as an excellent lodging recommendation.

Bonus: I like to seek out places that have excellent breakfast reviews & nice bedding reviews

I’m more concerned about the latter route. I would rather have a longer 1st stretch drive bc the drive will probably be more challenging going south near the alps.

Currently I have Ringgenberg as my base city. Not sure if that is a good choice?

Also I prefer 3-4 hr drives between cities. Ideally.

Thank you kindly.

Hi, just wondering if I understand you correctly. You are driving from Italy to Germany and are thinking of Ringgenberg (a small village…definitely not a city…on the Lake of Brienz) for an overnight stay along the way?

Confused. Aosta is in Italy between Chamonix France and Torino Italy. Can you clarify your details?

Lake Brienz is pretty and quiet. Interlaken is ideal base for many reasons. Thun is far more interesting than Brienz.

Gueten Abig Maureen,

Sorry I was trying to keep my question short so I wouldn’t bore anyone. My full detailed itinerary is on another forum: General Europe. There I asked for suggestions. I originally had a train trip, but my co traveler wanted to turn it into a scenic road trip. Hehe.

I read about the Great St. Bernard Pass it starts in Martigny & ends in Aosta.

Starting in Frankfurt (long story as to why)
Triberg
*Swiss city…this is where I need help.

Originally I was gonna stay in Lucerne or nearby but if I do this drive Lucerne is too far from the end of the route.

So I came up with Ringgenberg as a suggestion. Near Interlaken. That make the distance better both ends.

Afterwards I’m on my way to Varenna. But previous people also commented on Aosta so I may just scratch this route. It’s making my route map look quite embarrassing. Hehe.

Thank you for your comment. If you have Swiss city suggestion for my dilemma I greatly appreciate it. Also if you would also like to vote I take the pass drive off my itinerary I’ll note that too.

Merci Villal!!!!

Hi RailRider,

I hope you saw my explanation on the other topic? If not please let me know so I can screenshot to you. Thank you. I really appreciated your thoughts.

Check your routing but it seems like Murten/Morat is pretty easy to put into your path, right around the halfway point. It is a very quaint and beautiful medieval Swiss town -- castle, lake, mountains in the distance. There's a great little wine bar in town serving all local products (Altstadt Apéro-Bar). Have not been to Ringgenberg, but it is smaller than Murten, and might not have as many choices or options.

Thank you History Traveler for your suggestion. I looked at the map & logistically that is a fantastic suggestion. I even found an accommodation that I would love to stay in. However, logistically being closer to Interlaken makes it easier for visiting other sites on the train route. I do agree Ringgenberg is small but the lodging offers bus passes to Interlaken which makes it easy to sight see.

But I appreciate your suggestion!!!

Aren't you driving, though? I am a bit confused.
In any case, there are tons of sights between Murten & Gd. St. Bernard pass. Gruyères, Chillon Castle, Fondation Gianadda in Martigny to name but a few.

I'm trying to follow all these posts, but every time I get more confused.

Here you now say

Ringgenberg is small but the lodging offers bus passes to Interlaken which makes it easy to sight see.

Why do you need bus passes if you are driving? Have you finally convinced your co traveller to leave the car behind and now you are back on the trains?

Hi Balso…

Yes, sorry I am driving. I was planning to use Interlaken as my base city for Switzerland to visit surrounding cities & use the train. It will give me a break from driving. I’m actually looking forward to the mini day train trips. Hehe

Ha Nigel…
So sorry to confuse some of you. I try not to ramble too much when asking for advice, but I should have been more clear about my intentions in Ringgenberg.

Because we only have a good 4 days in Switzerland to roam & sight see I wanted to pick an area I thought would be semi easy to venture to other destinations.

Yes, I will have a car but I wanted to take advantage of city buses/train to go to other stops. Also some of the places I wanted to go are car free zones so I didn’t want to deal with finding a place to park & ride. And this way I was gonna get my itch for Swiss trains fulfilled. Perhaps the golden pass for the day…etc. Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald/Wengen/Jungfrau region etc.

These are just some of my visit wish lists. We will see how much I can squeeze in.

Going back to Ringgenberg, the reason I am able to consider that place is BECAUSE I will have a car. Otherwise if I was only doing trains I probably would have used Interlaken for my home base.

(Many people suggested that as a home base for venturing out).

But the reason I said it was nice the lodging offered the free passes was then it makes my travel easier since I wanted to leave the car behind & not stress about finding places on my gps. I’ll be stressed enough on the rest of the trip navigating. Hehe. As a matter of fact, if possible whenever we are staying in cities 3-4 days I intend to use city transport/by foot for logistics. It’s more carefree for me.

Hope that illustrates what my goal was for Interlaken/Ringgenberg.

Thank you to all who make these comments bc it helps me understand I need to be more transparent with my layout/objectives.

Hello Nova,

Ringgenberg is just fine. I didn’t realise you were staying for a few days, I thought you meant just a place to spend the night before traveling on.

Yes, the bus will be free with your overnight stay (bus every half hour). If heading into the Lauterbrunnen area you can drive to the new parking lot in Matten (by Interlaken). There is a new train station there and you can do a ’park and ride’, if you want to.
Have a wonderful holiday and enjoy exploring the area.
