My husband and I are traveling to Basel in November. We will be there for 4 days before embarking on a Viking River Cruise. Does anyone have any recommendations for a B&B or a mid-priced hotel? Something centrally located so we can get out and explore the area. Thanks.
Shirley, I don't like to recommend a specific place because:
(a) I live here, so have never stayed in a hotel here, though I have had reports from people who have.
(b) It is a matter of personal preference, do you want 3-star or 5-star. Are you happy with a traditional hotel or do you insist on a new build with identical rooms and all facilities?
Prices in Basel aren't cheap. They start at CHF 100 per night, in busy times more. Expect to spend CHF 150-200 per night for a "mid-price".
One piece of advice, stay in Basel city. It is tempting to save money by taking a hotel in the suburbs or outside the city. If you stay in the city everything is within easy reach, AND you get free public transport for the duration of your stay. Outside the city it may be a slog (20-30 minutes) into the city, or if you pick a really bad choice, no transport into the city at all.
I would start by looking on the official tourist site, which lists and has booking for all hotels in Basel and suburbs: https://www.basel.com/en
Some to think about, no promises.
- For an "interesting" hotel near the river, the Ressliryti: https://www.resslirytti.ch/en/
- For a good medium price large hotel by the station (super convenient location)
- For a economical "new build" in the centre: Motel One: https://www.motel-one.com/en/hotels/basel/hotel-basel/
- Hotel Basel is also a new build in a good location in the city centre, but I know less about it: https://www.hotel-basel.ch/en/home/
Thanks Chris!
If you're open to staying at an airbnb, I can highly recommend this apartment https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/233665 . At the time we stayed there, another bedroom was open so it fit the five of us (three children) but now they just rent to parties of 2. Sandy and Sven are nothing short of amazing. The flat is perfect and is between the train station and old town. We walked everywhere. We stayed for five weeks on our first visit and three weeks on our second. I'd stay again in a heart beat.
