Rail Pass

We have our itinerary set. Now I just need to figure out which rail passes would be best for our trip. We have our hotels booked but that's about it. Here's our itinerary. My question is since we are starting in Germany and ending in Paris should we get the eurail pass and some other pass for the mountains while we are in Switzerland? Or should we go with the STP pass? We are traveling this September.

Don’t buy a Eurail Pass. Your travel from Munich to Lucerne and throughout Switzerland only amounts to about $200 of train travel. And a Eurail Pass will not help with costs on cable cars and gondolas in the Berner Oberland.
When you depart Wengen for Paris. you first go to Interlaaken. Then, from Interlaaken to Basel, Switzerland the train ticket starts at about $50. Finally, Basel to Paris starts at about $90. This Basel to Paris ticket should be bought in advance.

I have a friend from Australia visiting us, and of course his travel agent got him an Eurail Pass. We just cancelled that for the90% refund, and will be buying hime Jungfrau Travel Pass in stead.

Eurail is not a good option if you are going to be mostly in Switzerland.

My suggestion:

  • Get the Swiss Half Fare Card.
  • Buy Munich-Luzern and Wengen - Paris in advance. You can buy both on www.sbb.ch
  • You could also buy Luzern - Wengen in advance, but the discount you get when doing so is not huge.
  • Get the Jungfrau Travel Pass in Wengen.
