Quiet hotels in Zurich in central location

We are planning a trip to Switzerland using Zurich as a base. Would love suggestions for a good quiet hotel near central location and not too far from train station as we will be taking day trips by train to other parts of Switzerland.

Thank you for your suggestions.

cicifromm - Have you considered also Lucerne as a base? What part of Switzerland do you plan on exploring, Swiss alps or Swiss cities?

You can browse through Zurich hotels that are close to the train terminal on this link.

Yes have considered Lucerne as base, would that be a better place to base ourselves. Likely going to mostly cities and a bit in the alps. Would visit Lucerne, Bern, Lausanne and a bit in the Alps and then on to Italy. Thank you for any suggestions in Lucerne as well as Zurich.

How many days will you spend in Switzerland before going to Italy? I sent you a link on first post for Zurich hotels.

I would not pick Zurich. So many more interesting places to base yourself.

I do not suggest Hotel Alexander as a quiet hotel in Zurich. I was kept up most of the night by the partiers down below in the street.

I would also suggest using Lucerne as a home base for touring Switzerland. There are some nice day trips possible to Pilatus or Rigi, trips to the Berner Oberland or other areas. You can check the RS Switzerland guidebook for hotel suggestions. Your local library should have a copy. I've stayed at the Hotel Stern on several occasions and would certainy recommend it. It's only about a 10 minute (or so) walk from the hotel to the station.

Agree that you should stay in Luzern. Its only 1 hour 15 minutes or so by train from the ultra-convenient rail station at the Zurich airport. You want to be in the mountains, not looking at them at a distance from the busy banking/shopping streets of Zurich. We liked the location and value (relatively) of the Hotel des Alpes, right across the street from the Luzern rail station, making it easy to catch a train anywhere.

As a local I can tell you'd be better of based in Olten, it is one of the major switching points in the Swiss train network and you have trains leaving several times an hour to the destinations you mentioned. It is also off the tourist track so hotel prices etc are much more favourable.
