Quick weekend in Switzerland - can I pull off Lauterbrunnen / Jungfrauoch area?

I have a quick layover weekend in Zurich after a business trip next weekend. Can I get from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen / Jungraujoch or Gimmelwald area by train for a couple of nights the first weekend of February? I would be able to depart Zurich early Friday morning and would need to be back at the airport by about noon or so on Sunday. Doable? Or too ambitious? It's just me.

I was thinking I could get an air bnb in one of the towns and maybe go by train for a day trip to see other areas?

I was worried a car may not make sense in the snow and the passes. I am also not experienced snow driver.

Thanks in advance for the tips!

The journey between Zurich airport and Lauterbrunnen is 2h 40m each way, and on Sunday the train from Lauterbrunnen starts running at 6 am so you can easily make it to the airport before noon. I didn't check Grindelwald, but it should be similar. Use SBB.ch

This is prime ski season in the area and an Airbnb apartment may be hard to find; many want a longer stay. But there are plenty of hotels, especially in Grindelwald.

Thank you so much for the help. It looks like it's better to do point to point ticketing than a rail pass...I think.

And Gimmelwald does have more inexpensive accommodations available, just looks like it's an added bus and cable car.

I get in Thursday evening, so I think I'll get a Zurich airport hotel and hit the train early Friday morning.

Be aware that Grindelwald and Gimmelwald are two separate locations. Lola mentions Grindelwald, and you mention Gimmelwald. They are in the same area but very different.

Thank you for noticing that, I was looking at Gimmelwald, seems like it was less touristy and more in the budget.

But, maybe not the best location to base from being that it is accessed only by gondola? Not sure...

Still wondering if I should invest in the rail pass or go point to point...

Good point, Kathy; I mis-read his post. Getting up to Gimmelwald will add a little time for the bus and cable car, but not much. It is all timed to be a seamless transfer.

But once you are in Gimmelwald you have to go elsewhere for everything.

With tight time and desires to see several places why oh why would you stay so remote?

I know Nigel, but at this late stage in the game, there is very little open elsewhere that's in the price range for lodging. One review said it was easy to get everywhere they want to go, so hopefully that's the case...

Where would you recommend? I will keep looking!

Thanks for the reply khull78.

If you haven't been to Gimmelwald before just understand that it is relatively inconvenient and isolated. Yes, you can walk - uphill - to Mürren (I walk it in sort of half an hour, down hill only, never uphill, and that amount of time is on a dry warm path) and I don't know how long you would take in the snow. There is nowhere else to walk to easily.

Or you can take the cable car to the Gimmelwald side of the small village of Mürren. If you want to get to the Grütschalp train that is all the way across the village. There are some restaurants and shops in Mürren and a small Coop supermarket.

Or you can take the cable car down the cliff to Stechelberg. There is nothing there but a car park and a bus stop. From the bottom of the cable car the Postbus will take you to Lauterbrunnen in the middle of the valley where you find shops and restaurants and the train up to Wengen and beyond, and the cable car up to the Grütschalp train to Mürren.

In other words, in order to do anything around Gimmelwald you have to go somewhere else. There are reasons the prices are more affordable.

I understand why Lola suggested Grindelwald, the next valley over. It is very much larger with much more choice in accommodation and food. At the foot of the Eiger, too.

I wish you good luck finding what you are looking for.

What about Wengen? Looks like there are some accommodations there? Would that also be considered off the beaten track?

I have also found one in Lauterbrunnen.

I get I would have to take a train to Wengen, but mabye more accessible and amenities there than Gimmelwald. And no cars.

Or Lauterbrunnen with cars and close to everything around also, minus an extra train to/from.

Would welcome any weighing thoughts one way or the other...

Thank you!

I think you have summarised Wengen and Lauterbrunnen quite well.

Wengen is definitely more accessible and has more amenities than Gimmelwald. Lauterbrunnen has a more central location. Wengen is more up in the mountains, whereas Lauterbrunnen is in a valley. You can still see the mountains, you’re just not up in them.

Thanks all! I think I may opt for the more rustic setting of Wengen, where I have options for food and grocery. But, am close to everything else. If I'm going for it, may as well put myself in the mountains. Too bad the hiking conditions probably aren't so ideal the first weekend of February.

I appreciate the insight everyone!

Wengen is a good choice.

Final decision, found a hotel in Lauterbrunnen in my budget, 5 mins walk from train station with breakfast included and en suite bathroom. Booked it. (Wengen was a little less, but no en suite bathroom and breakfast for a fee, plus added train fares)

Look forward to exploring Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Murren. Weather is suppose to be rainy, so will just play it all by ear and enjoy the fondue along the way!

I think Lauterbrunnen is a good option. From there, you can choose to visit Wengen or Mürren. You can also take the gondola and ski lift from Wengen to Grindelwald. Provides some options. Or you can just find a bench and enjoy a beautiful Mountain View. For your brief visit, i would only use Lauterbrunnen to sleep and spend your daylight hours up in the mountains. Enjoy!
