Flying in from USA -main areas to visit will be Zermatt and lauterbrunnen valley region, probably staying in murren. We were thinking two days in Zermatt , and then four or five days in the Bernese overland area. . is it better to fly into Geneva or Zürich? Is there train service from Geneva to Zermatt? Originally, we were also interested in visiting.Appenzell. However, with most of our trip focused in the southern area of the country it seemed like Appenzell was out of the way. Is it worth including Appenzell in our trip? Any other recommendations for places to visit that are quaint with great views?we can stay up to 12-14 days. Thanks. OK.

When visiting mountains always add an extra night in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. How many nights is two days? There’s a lot to do in both Zermatt and the Lauterbrunnen Valley and I say five nights minimum for each.

Research your air availability, connections, and price from each airport. Use Google Flights and set up price Alerts for RT each airport. However, Flying open jaw, (Multi- city, )all on one ticket may be best: go into one airport, and leave from the other. Although you can't set up Alerts for multi-city, I've found that if you set up RT Alerts, the price for multi- city trips pretty much aligns.
If you fly in/out of Zurich, it's easy to go straight to/from Luzern, as it's an easy 1+ hrs train commute.

Fly into Geneva and out of Zurich to do something like this:
Geneva Airport > Montreux (2 nights) > Zermatt (2-3 nights) > Murren (4-5 nights) > Appenzell or Luzern (2-3 nights) > Zurich Airport
Or fly in and out of Zurich to do something like this:
Zurich Airport > Luzern (2 nights) > Zermatt (2-3 nights) > Murren (4-5 nights) > Appenzell (2-3 nights) > Zurich Airport
Or skip Appenzell and simplify your bases. If you're not majorly into hiking, it's fine to skip Appenzell, as the town itself is just okay and not really worth a detour in my opinion.

Zurich Airport > Zermatt (3 nights) > Murren (5-6 nights) > Luzern (3-4 nights) > Zurich Airport
