Question Regarding Swiss Travel Pass and Covered (Free) City Transport

Hello all,

Can anyone provide information regarding the free city transport that is included as part of the Swiss Travel Pass' perks, please?

I haven't yet decided if I am going with a 15 day consecutive pass, or a 8 day out of a month flex day pass. Is the free city transportation covered ONLY on travel days, does anyone know?

Thanks in advance!

A Swiss Tavel Pass covers all public transport. So yes, you can use city transport on the days for which it is valid. This is not a "perk". This is just how this works. Swiss public transport is fully integrated.

So if you get a flex pass you only can take public transport on travel days.

Now, if you are considering getting the Flex Pass because you are not going to be doing big trips every day then maybe consider getting the Half Fare Card in stead, and just buying tickets for your big trips, and local passes/tickets for your local trips. Which places in Switzerland are you planning to visit?

Most Swiss hotels offer a free " mobility pass" that covers local trams and buses. Safe travels!

Thanks for the responses.

@WengkenK: I'm going to be in Zurich (2 days), Bern (2 days), Geneva (1 day), Basel (2 days), Zermatt - St. Moritz (Glacier Express, which I believe does NOT count as a travel day), St. Moritz (1 day)), then back to Geneva again (5 days) before moving onto London.

The Geneva portion will be spent with a relative, so I won't get a free transit pass while I am there, which as @Pat noted is available from some Swiss hotels. Additionally, I understand that Zurich hotels do not provide free transit passes as well, unless things may have changed?

I will look into the Half Fare Card, thanks for the suggestion!

Best regards.

I believe you can use a travel day on the glacier express, you just have to pay the seat reservation (which is still a pretty penny) but that has to be bought whether you buy your ticket outright or use a travel pass to cover it. Definitely crunch the numbers and see if it makes more sense to do the half fare card vs the travel pass and even do the math of getting both if you happen to want to go on a cable car or gondola that wouldn’t be covered by the pass. But to answer your initial question, yes using public transport would count as a travel day.

If you want to use your STP to travel on the Glacier express than it needs to be active. Otherwise you will not only pay for the reservation, but also for the ticket.

If is also a bit of a waste of money to use a STP for city travel, as day tickets for city transport are not expensive. You are probably going to better off with the Half Fare Card, and just buying tickets.
