Question on car travel

My husband and I will be attending a meeting in Geneva. We want to rent a car, drive across Switzerland to Salzburg and then on to Munich for our flight home. Could someone give me an idea of the best route to take to see the most of the beautiful country. We have five days to travel before our flight out of Munich back to the US. This would be so helpful as I cannot tell from all that I have read what is the best . Thank you so much for your help.

Obvious warning: Have you checked how much it will cost to rent a hire car in one country and return it in another? This usually incurs a high surcharge.

Plenty of places to dawdle in Switzerland (Berner Oberland, Luzern, ....), then head east via the Arlbergpass and stop off in Innsbruck.

Tolls: If you have a Swiss car, it will probably already have an annual Autoroute/Autobahn toll "Vignette". You will have to buy an Austrian Vignette at the border.

Nancy,

Have you looked into train travel? This might be easier and less stressful than a car.

Drop off fees in another country will be very high.Use the car and turn it in at a train station at the border and take the train across the border and pick up another car.

nancy,

Aside from the high drop-off charges, one other point to mention is that each driver listed on the rental form may require an International Driver's Permit for some of the countries you'll be driving through. I believe that's required in Austria, and it's definitely compulsory in Italy. If your route takes you through Italy, you'll also have to be vigilant to avoid the dreaded ZTL (limited traffic) areas which exist in many towns.
