My family is traveling from Prague to Interlaken in December. Any suggestions for the best transportation -- train or air? Is it best to travel in daylight? Scenic trip by train?
Thank you for your insight. Rochelle
Since it is about a 12 hour journey by bus & train, I'd look at flying. Easyjet flies to Basel on Wed, Fri, and Sun for as low as $55 US. From Basel airport, bus to Basel SBB station where there are trains to Interlaken every half hour, cost 65 CHF and takes about 2 1/2 hours.
Swiss also flies several times a day from Prague to Zurich for a lot more money. Easy rail connection from Zurich airport to Interlaken.
Edit - Easiest ground transport would be a 7 hour bus ride to Mannheim. Bus has toilets, snacks for sale and wi-fi. Then a short walk (300 yds) to the main station and a 1 hour wait at the station for a direct train to Interlaken. Lots of services/restaurants at Mannheim Hbf. Then a 4 1/2 hour train to Interlaken. Advance purchase nonrefundable tickets are 140 EUR per person.
