we will be leaving Switzerland on day 5 so Swiss travel pass ( 4 day) will not be valid. Can anyone help figure price from Lauterbrenen to Milan?
- Go to the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) website: https://www.sbb.ch/en
- Enter From: Lauterbrunnen (note spelling), to: Milano Centrale
- Enter: date and desired time.
- Click on "Search"
- Pick one of the trains listed, and click on "Purchase"
- Go through the rest of the options (number of passengers, age, reduction: None, 2nd class). and you will eventually get a price.
I picked a random day, and it gave me the following:
Lauterbrunnen - Milano Centrale
Via Interlaken Ost - Spiez - Domodossola (I)
Mon, 07.05.18, 09:02 - 14:35 Hour
Duration: 05:33, 3x Change(s)
Passengers: 1 Adult, 2nd Class
CHF 76
Different trains will have different prices, because that is the way Italian Railways work.
You can then proceed to buy the tickets, to be picked up at a Swiss station.
Thank you!
I see a Sparangebot ( Special offer) price of 53 CHF for tickets 3+ months in advance (mid-July). That is on the direct train fron Spiez to Milano Centrale, so departing Lauterbrunnen at 13:02. Regular fare on that train combination is 98 CHF.
You can also get that same train for 29 EUR from Trenitalia. Not sure if it is a available as a print-at-home or downloadable-to-an-app ticket. If you had to pick up the ticket in Italy beforehand, that could pose a problem.
The 29 euro ticket on Trenitalia will be just the train from Spiez to Milan. You would buy the leg from Lauterbrunnen to Spiez from SBB, at the station if you like.
The Trenitalia ticket should be a print-at-home, at least all the ones we have bought (including cross-border trips) have been.
If I purchase ticket on line from Milan Central to Domodossola then I understand the Swiss Travel Pass picks up from there? Do I need to make a reservation for the remainder of trip from Domodossola to Lauterbrunnen or do we just get on any train once in Domodossola? And do we need to reserve seat? all so confusing...

Correct. You can see this on the official coverage map for the Swiss Travel Pass. The line changes from grey (not covered) to red (covered) at Domodossola: https://www.sbb.ch/content/dam/infrastruktur/trafimage/karten/karte-sts-pass-gueltigkeit.pdf

No, no reservations needed or usually possible on Swiss trains (except for the four extra named tourist trains). In many cases you do not even need to change trains at Domodossola, the same train continues into Switzerland. So you stay seated, and when the Swiss ticket inspector comes round, show them your Swiss Pass.
And do we need to reserve seat? all so confusing...
You Italian ticket will include a reserved seat. It will give the train ID, date, coach and seat numbers on your Italian ticket, and the ticket will only be valid on that train..
As above, no reservation needed for Swiss trains, you are legally sitting in an unreserved seat
Swiss and Italian railway companies have radically different philosophies for ticketing. This confuses first time travellers.
But you said that you were on day 5 of a 4 day pass. How could the fact that the product gets to Domodossola help?
Thank you ChrisF - most helpful :)
