I am confused...the more I read online...the more confused I get. I know that the RS forum will have the answer. What type of plug adapter is needed for Switzerland? I have the two round prong adapter but some sites indicate that a 3 prong adapter is needed. I need your guidance, please and thank you!
If your device requires a ground, then yes, the Swiss Type J plugs have three 4 mm round pins with the power pins 19 mm apart and the ground pin offset forming a "diamond". The ungrounded "Euro" Type C plug adapter that Rick Steves sells almost fits the Swiss plugs in that the adaptor has two round pins 19 mm apart, but the pins are slightly larger than 4 mm. We could push the Type C adapter in but is is a snug fit.
The Swiss hotels (at least the ones we booked) had loaner adapters that would adapter Type C (2 pin ungrounded) and Type F (Schuko grounded) to the Swiss Type J. Using the Swiss adaptor would be a better idea to accommodate your Euro adapter than forcing big pins into small holes. You will have to chain the adapters - North American flat blade to Euro round fat pins to Swiss three smaller round pins. Use duct tape if needed. Or just force your fat round pins and hope for the best.
Sherry,
The first question to ask is whether the devices you'll be using in Switzerland have a two pin or three pins (grounded). If all devices just have two pins, then the standard Euro plug adapter with the smaller pins will work fine - https://www.walmart.com/ip/5X-USA-US-to-EU-Europe-Travel-Power-Adapter-Converter-Wall-Plug/28880902
If you're connected grounded appliances, then the Swiss grounded Adapter will be required - https://www.walmart.com/ip/US-to-SWITZERLAND-Travel-Adapter-Plug-Universal-EUROPE-Type-E-C-F-J-2-Pack/740944121
They're cheap so why not pack one of each.
just go to Amazon and buy the Swiss adapter. That's what I did and it was fine. As noted, buy 2 or three because nowadays everything needs to charge every night.
