We are now finding that due to a knee injury which stopped me from hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc we have extra days that we need to fill in. Right now we are in Chamonix and will travel to Courmayeur which was booked as part of the TMB. From there we will travel back to Chamonix and take the cable car up to Refuge La Flegere and stay for 2 nights. (I can hike but not with a heavy pack). We then have 4 nights to fill in before taking the train to Zermatt where we have a reservation. We have a Swiss half fare card so taking trains is not a concern. Any suggestions on places to stay for either 2 or the full 4 nights before we get to Zermatt? It would be nice to stay in smaller centres.
Thanks
If you are looking for idyllic mountain spots, try Villars, Leysin, or Les Diablerets. All are on spur lines from the main line track between Lausanne and Visp, so easy to get to from Chamonix and easy to get to Zermatt.
Possibly a few relaxing days in Annecy, France to recoup with a boat ride, etc.?
There is a very pretty little town in Valais between Martigny and Zermatt called Sion. Small, medieval town core with two hills in the middle...one topped with a ruined castle and the other with a very ancient church. The whole place is surrounded by vineyards making it really quite dramatic. It would be a great place to spend two nights on the way. It's right on the rail line so easily doable. Few tourists.
Thanks for the suggestions. We have managed to find a 'reasonably' priced place in Annecy for 2 night then will travel to Sion in Switzerland for the remaining 2 nights. Right now we are in Courmayeur Italy enjoying the warm weather and spectacular views.
