Planning short trips near Zurich

Hello
My husband and I are planning to travel to Zurich the first week of October.
We would like to take little two day trips nearby. Maybe even Italy or Germany.
Do any of you have any suggestions?
Our plans originally were to start in Milan and then go to Zurich, but it seems like they are experiencing strikes and protests.
We don't want to be stuck in the middle of that.

Thank you
Maria

Look at Lake Constance/Konstanz, also known as Bordensee, it is on the Borders of Switzerland, Germany and Austria. It is great for recreation with Bike Trails, Ferry Rides, Old Towns, and Ski Gondolas on the Swiss side. Look at this sites search and Wikipedia for more info. It is about an Hour and 12 minutes on the train from Zurich. There are about 45 trains a day.

Nitpicker here. Bodensee, and it borders Austria, not Italy.

Luzern is a popular choice, only an hour south of Zurich by train, also with boat rides and mountain top railways and lifts.

Thank you
Is Mendisio worth visiting?
We were thinking of Lake Como or Tirano.
Any idea if it is worth visiting in October?

Thanks a bunch

From Zurich I would look at day trips to Lucerne or Appenzel. Switzerland is not that small.

How do you define day trip? I've done a day trip to Locarno and Ascona from Zurich - it was a very long day but it was perfectly possible. (I had a saver day pass and my initial plans had been ruined by terrible weather north of the Alps, so I went off in search of sun.)

Konstanz and the surrounding area (Mainau, Meersburg) are easy to get to from Zurich too. I've also been to Rheinfall/Schaffhausen as a day trip, and Mt Rigi too (via Arth-Goldau).

I've also done a spa day in Baden (that was during the aforementioned bad weather trip) for a lot less money than the same experience would have cost me in Zurich.

(Yes, I'm based in Zurich a lot. Work; friends; a direct flight from my local airport; and Lake Zurich is one of my favourite places to swim.)
