planning a trip through Switzerland

I will be meeting my daughter in Rome for a weekend. Then I will be traveling solo from Monday to Friday when I need to be in Brussels. I've already been to Florence and Paris, so it seems to make sense to head through Switzerland and see the sights.

Suggestions on what to see in those 5 days and how to do it?

I'm not sure that maximizes your time, as you will have to be fairly on the go. I would scope out options for how to get to Brussels first so you know how much time you have to work with.
I guess one option would be to head to Lugano (fairly easy by train from Rome), stay a few days, then head to Lucerne for a couple nights before heading to Zurich and hopping on a plane.

No. Just an expensive and time consuming detour.
valedelphia had best solution. It takes 7 3/4 hours to get from Luzern to Brussels on the train with 3 changes. 7 hours if you go through Paris, but then you have to change stations from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord.

If I were you, I would pick one place in Italy or Switzerland to enjoy and then fly to Brussels.

when is the trip?

for such a short hop from Switzerland to Brussels it would be such a shame to put so much pollution in the air.

Trains are easy and straightforward. And much more scenic. Could then go to Metz which is beautiful or Colmar or Strasbourg and if you want to see Luxembourg for a day or half why not? The fact that one person does not like it is now countered by one who does... I visit Luxembourg most times I come to Germany... Like now.

A lot depends on when. A week is a good amount of time to tie Rome and Brussels together...
