We will be leaving out of Zurich airport and will have to spend our last night somewhere in Zurich or close to it. We prefer to be outside of Zurich in a charming village or someplace memorable as our plane doesn't leave till 2PM. Any recommendations of where to spend our last night is greatly appreciated

This is going back decades (things may have changed), but I stayed once at Winterthur (20 min. to the airport) and once at Zug (closer to an hour away). It's likely that they are both larger places than you want, though. Neither is a village. I'm sure there are many other viable options since the Swiss trains run so frequently and reliably.
Schaffhausen is also less than an hour from the airport.

Stay in Luzern on your last night. It has a direct rail link to the Zurich airport, leaves 2x per hour and takes 70 minutes.

FastEddie is correct. Stay in Luzern, nearly as quick to the airport as from Zürich.

Hmmm...maybe do Appenzell, specifically Ebenalp for the day? Stay in Wasauren or Appenzell proper for the night? Otherwise I might stay at my ZRH airport hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel Alexander in Zurich. The location was convenient to the train station, next door to a supermarket, and the rooms were air conditioned. We did not know to ask for a room away from the street and the street noise was a huge problem for us through the night. If you think about staying here, insist on a room at the back of the hotel.
