We are taking a river cruise ending in Basel. Plan to go to zermatt for sure. Any other places that are a must see? We will be using trains. 3 seniors
Hotel recommendations would also be great
What do you like to do? Have you read a guidebook? That is a great source of inspiration. Also take a look at this page https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles on this very website and scroll down to see Rick’s many articles on Switzerland.
Is your flight home from Zurich? How many days do you have from the time you leave the cruise to your flight home?
We are on a river cruise ending in Basel in May. Afterwards we're spending 3 days in Colmar and then 2 days in Lucerne and 2 in Zurich before flying home. I can't speak from experience if any are worthy destinations, but Colmar and the Alsace has been on our list fire a long time.
The AT A GLANCE section here is a good place to start.

We have 1 week. Haven’t made our flight reservations yet. We like traditional and cultural. No big cities
2 nights in Zermatt, 3 nights in Muerren (or Gimmelwald if you want a real rural, quiet place) then 1 or 2 nights in Luzern. If your flight out of Zurich is after 10 am (most to North America are), you can get a direct train from Luzern to Zurich airport in just over 1 hour. I would not call Luzern a big city, but it is beautiful on a big beautiful lake
