physical hiking map recommendations?

Greetings Forum Friends,

I am a big fan of physical maps, such as the waterproof National Geographic Adventure maps. My husband and I will be spending 10 days in Mürren in June 2027 with the plan of hiking a lot. I haven't been able to find a map that isn't tiny and part of a book or website.

On my current hike list are: Allmendhuble Flower trail, panorama way loop trail (instead of gnarly 6-hour Schynige Platte to First hike), Schynige Platte Alpine Botanical Garden (edelweiss!), Schilt alpine dairy, Mountain view trail, Northface trail, Grutschalp-Murren, Rotstock hut, Murren-Gimmelwald-Stechelberg-Lauterbrunnen, Lauterbrunnen Valley & waterfalls (Tolkien's Rivendell!), Mannlichen-klein scheidegg.

Can anyone recommend a good physical map of the trails for me? In English would be nice, but not a hard requirement.

Though I cannot help you regarding a map for your Swiss hike, I can say that it's a good idea to get a physical map if one is available. In late May/early June, I hiked about 75 miles in England's Lake District where I used an interactive map. I didn't like it because I didn't always get connectivity. I had connectivity about 90% of the time, but that was inadequate.

In the 2000s, I hiked twice in Ireland, where I used physical maps as part of two different 100-mile-long hikes: They were much better than the interactive map I recently used.

We like to carry one available here https://www.edition-mpa.ch/hiking_maps. Scroll down to find “Lauterbrunnental.” It’s a bit expensive to ship but you can buy it in country. Perhaps in the city you arrive to or contact [email protected] to see if the Tourism office has it in stock.

Happy travels from another Oregonian hiker. We’ll be in the Lauterbrunnen Valley in late September.

Maps can't hurt, and I'm sorry I can't help you find one. I can add though, for your peace of mind, tell you that the Swiss hiking trails are AMAZINGLY well signposted. Every few hundred metres and intersection there are arrows showing you the destination, distance and walking time. We hiked from Birg (stop just below Schilthorn) down to Murren without a map.

Of the hikes on your list, I've done Allmendhubel (very easy), Grutschalp-Murren (flat), Murren-Gimmelwald-Stechelberg-Lauterbrunnen (one of my favourite - don't forget to stop at Trummelbachfalle, a waterfall INSIDE a mountain).

While not trying to discourage you from a physical map.I just want to make sure you are aware on the all trails app.You do not need internet connectivity.You can download a map prior to your hike and use it offline without an internet connection.
